Contents
Levodopa 250 mg, carbidopa 25 mg
Indications/Uses
Management of idiopathic Parkinson's disease, postencephalictic & symptomatic parkinsonism.
Dosage/Direction for Use
1 tab tid-qid. May be increased to ½ or 1 tab every 1-2 days. Max: 8 tab daily. Alternatively, may titrate dose to 6 tab daily & further adjusted w/ increments of levodopa. Levodopa requirement >1,500 mg daily Initially 1 tab tid-qid.
Administration
May be taken with or without food.
Contraindications
Hypersensitivity. Narrow angle glaucoma, suspicious undiagnosed skin lesion or history of melanoma. Concomitant use w/ MAOIs. Lactation.
Special Precautions
Severe CV or pulmonary disease, bronchial asthma, endocrine disease, peptic ulcer or chronic wide angle glaucoma. Dyskinesia. Occurrence of blepharospasm. Periodic evaluations of hepatic, hematopoietic, CV & renal function. Discontinue MAOIs at least 2 wk prior to therapy. Renal or hepatic disease. Women of childbearing potential. Patient <18 yr.
Adverse Reactions
Nausea, choreiform dystonia & other involuntary movements; convulsions, dementia, mental changes eg, paranoid ideation, psychotic episodes & depression w/ or w/o suicidal tendencies.
Drug Interactions
Symptomatic postural hypotension w/ antihypertensives. Reduced therapeutic effects of levodopa w/ phenothiazines, butyrophenones, phenytoin & papaverine.
